Finance, the study of monetary markets and business practices, is an popular major among college students because it provides a comprehensive study of business world. Because of that, college graduates with finance degrees are always in demand in corporations, banks and industry. During their studies, finance majors learn about the movement of money, managing accounts and the behavior of markets in both the US and abroad.

Careers abound in finance, whether in banking, government, corporate finance or even non-profit organizations. Graduates with a degree in finance can take their pick from careers in these industries, in addition to fields such as real estate, healthcare management, and financial planning. And, statistically, the most common degree held by executives in business is finance. This is because a finance degree provides a broad-based understanding of how companies function, and how companies are effected financially by decision-making.

Students interested in a degree in finance are exposed to several different areas of study, including financial theory, microeconomics, macroeconomics, investments, tax systems, tax regulation, corporate financial planning and management, and the behavior of the financial markets. Additional areas of study, such as equity research, credit analysis and risk management complete the finance curriculum. Overall, the goal of the curriculum is to teach students how to identify and minimize risk for individuals and businesses by assessing insurance needs, corporate governance, financial auditing and data warehousing.

Firms with an interest in college graduates with finance degrees include: financial institutions and banks, publicly held corporations, public-sector work in the government, and non-profit agencies. A finance major is also a good start for those with an entrepreneurial spirit who might prefer to strike out on their own. Working as a financial planner is also an option. Concentrations in the stock market, international business, corporate finance and pricing methodology are also available.

By getting a degree in finance, college graduates enter a field with future demand. In the near future, those with concentrations in international finance, corporate stewardship, and corporate reorganization will be needed to help companies navigate changes in the business environment. Because of the need for people with financial backgrounds, salaries are relatively high-- even for those with a Bachelor’s Degree. Overall, a degree in finance is a great preparation for a future in many areas of business.
